No ORR Needed in Nellore Now: Narayana
The minister said, at present there is no proposal for an Outer Ring Road on our agenda
Nellore: Nellore does not require an Outer Ring Road (ORR) at present, municipal administration minister Dr Ponguru Narayana said on Sunday, putting to rest recent speculation on the proposal.
The minister said that while the suggestion made by NUDA chairman Kotamreddy Srinivasulu Reddy was well intentioned, the project was not feasible under the current financial situation. He pointed out that an ORR would require more than ₹2,000 crore, with a major portion of the cost going towards land acquisition and road design.
Narayana said traffic congestion in the city had eased significantly after the introduction of the mini bypass, which has reduced the flow of heavy vehicles through Trunk Road.
He announced that the existing four-lane bypass would soon be expanded to six lanes, and that two underpasses woul be constructed on the national highway — one in the rural stretch and another within the city limits — to further ease traffic bottlenecks.
“At present, there is no proposal for an Outer Ring Road on our agenda,” the minister said, adding that such a project would be considered only if population growth leads to serious traffic problems in the future.
He said the NDA government’s priority was to provide essential infrastructure and public amenities rather than undertake financially burdensome projects.
