Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has finalised reservations for the mayoral posts in all 17 municipal corporations, a key step toward the long-awaited urban local body elections to soon be held in the state.

The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department issued the notification on Monday through G.O. No. 252. Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar signed the orders.

Under the allocation, five corporations go to Backward Classes (BCs), two to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and one to a Scheduled Tribe (ST). Another five are reserved for women in the general category, and four remain unreserved.

ST (1): Mangalagiri-Tadepalli

SC (2): Rajahmundry, Kurnool

BC Women (2): Machilipatnam, Kakinada

BC General (3): Anantapur, Chittoor, Eluru

General Women (5): Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Guntur, Kadapa, Visakhapatnam

Unreserved (4): Tirupati, Vijayawada, Ongole, Nellore

Two of the state’s biggest cities, Visakhapatnam and Guntur, will now have women mayors. Vijayawada and Tirupati are in the unreserved category, so they are open to candidates from any group.
