VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday handed over a `200-crore compensation cheque to families displaced by the Veligonda project, assuring them that the government would stand by those who had sacrificed their land and homes for the irrigation project.
Naidu handed over the cheque to representatives of the displaced families on the premises of the state assembly. The government had released `300 crore to the oustees on June 27.
With the first phase of the Veligonda project nearing its inauguration, the government has stepped up compensation payments to project-affected families. The latest release takes the total compensation paid to Veligonda oustees to `518 crore.
Naidu said the sacrifices made by farmers and displaced families for the construction of major irrigation projects were being recognised by the government. He assured the families that the remaining compensation would also be released soon.
“Those who do good should be recognised,” the CM said, asserting that it was his government that had come to the aid of Veligonda project oustees.
Under the one-time settlement arrangement for families that had constructed houses on their own, the government had paid around `318 crore to 2,557 families. On Wednesday, Naidu handed over the `200-crore cheque meant for another 1,600 families. With this, 4,157 displaced families have received a total of `518 crore in compensation, according to the government.
Water resources minister Nimmala Ramanaidu stated that the government is also developing basic infrastructure in seven rehabilitation colonies for the project-affected families. Infrastructure works have been completed in six colonies, with Vemulakota being the exception.
He said the completion of the facilities has enabled displaced families to move into houses constructed for them in the rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) colonies.
The oustees expressed satisfaction over the compensation and the government's support after losing their land and houses for the project. People's representatives and leaders from the erstwhile Prakasam district attended the programme.
