Anantapur superintendent of police P. Jagadish on Saturday felicitated traffic police constable C. Surendra for saving a passenger being dragged by a moving train at Anantapur railway station.

According to police, Surendra had gone to the railway station to see off Traffic sub-inspector Ramanjulu Reddy, who had been proceeding to Tirupati district for bandobust duty on October 29.

After seeing off the SI, the constable started walking along platform No. 4 when he saw a man attempting to board a moving train, losing grip, and his body being dragged with one hand holding the train's handle.

Surendra immediately ran towards the passenger, got hold of the man’s collar, and pulled him onto the platform while the man left go off the train’s handle.

The intervention prevented a major mishap. The rescued man has been identified as Ravi Kumar, 49, of Bhairav Nagar in Anantapur. He escaped with minor injuries and expressed his gratitude to the constable. Surendra also suffered minor injuries.

On learning about the incident, SP Jagadish called the constable to the district police office and appreciated him. Jagadish said protecting people's lives is one of the primary responsibilities of the police and praised Surendra’s courage and quick response.

Those present at the constable’s felicitation included Traffic circle inspector Venkatesh Naik, Reserve inspector Pavan Kumar, Traffic sub-inspector Rambhupal and members of the District Police Officers' Association.
