VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) inaugurated the 78th National Inter-State and 87th National Senior Badminton Championships at the Chennupati Ramakotayya Indoor Stadium in Vijayawada on Monday.

The championships, organised by the Andhra Pradesh State Badminton Association, will continue till December 28.

Those present at the inauguration included Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ram Mohan, Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SSAP) chairman Animini Ravi Naidu, Swachh Andhra Corporation chairman Kommareddy Pattabhiram, and star shuttler P.V. Sindhu, who interacted with players from various states and encouraged them.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Sivanath reiterated that a world-class Sports University will be established at Amaravati, which will be the “crown jewel” of sports in Andhra Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

He said the proposed university will provide advanced training not only to athletes but also to coaches and professionals from various sports disciplines. This will enable Andhra Pradesh to emerge as a national centre for sports excellence.

The MP appreciated the SAAP leadership and Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association Secretary P. Ankam Chowdary for successfully hosting the national inter-state and senior badminton championships within a short timeframe. He thanked the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and organising committees for making the arrangements in a timely manner.

Sivanath shared information that the Chief Minister has agreed to attend the closing ceremony of the championships.

MLA Ram Mohan said the event has added vibrancy to Vijayawada, part of the Amaravati capital region.

SAAP chairman Ravi Naidu said the senior national badminton championship has returned to Andhra Pradesh after a decade. He said they are focusing on promoting badminton by upgrading infrastructure across the state.
