 ANANTAPUR: An outsourcing employee of the electricity department died after lightning struck a tree near Mundlapadu village in Putlur mandal on Monday.

B. Charan, 35, a shift operator at the Komatikuntla substation, was travelling on his motorcycle with his relative M. Devanand towards Tadipatri when heavy rain began. They parked the motorcycle near the outskirts of Gandlapadu village and took shelter under a tree.

According to sources, lightning struck the tree, severely damaging Charan’s mobile phone, which reportedly exploded. Charan was electrocuted and died on the spot.

Local leaders from Sanagalagudu alerted the police, who shifted the body to the Tadipatri government hospital for post-mortem examination.

Devanand, who was a few steps away from Charan under the tree, survived with minor injuries.
