KURNOOL: In a rare medical success, doctors at the KIMS Hospital in Kurnool treated a 61-year-old man suffering from a complex neurological disorder caused by a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. The treatment has been successful, enabling the patient’s recovery after a prolonged critical illness.

Senior consultant neurosurgeon Dr. N. Sumanth Kumar said the patient, Srinivasulu, had earlier undergone two surgeries for recurrent blood clots over the brain surface. But his condition continued to deteriorate. Detailed evaluation later revealed a tear in the protective covering of the upper spinal cord, leading to continuous CSF leakage, which resulted in cerebral hypotension, a rare and difficult-to-diagnose condition.

Doctors initially attempted three epidural blood patch procedures to seal the leak. As there had been no significant improvement, the team proceeded with a complex open dural repair surgery. Locating the tear proved challenging due to enlarged veins and heavy intraoperative bleeding, but the team successfully repaired the defect.

Though his condition briefly worsened post-surgery, continuous intensive care helped stabilise him. The patient remained hospitalised for nearly a month, including 23 days in ICU.

Srinivasulu has started gradually recovering, speaking after 25 days, resuming oral intake, and eventually walking independently.

Doctors have credited the outcome to coordinated multidisciplinary care and advanced diagnosis.
