VISAKHAPATNAM: Minister for MSMEs Kondapalli Srinivas on Sunday called upon people to work collectively towards building a polio-free society.
The minister participated in the Pulse Polio programme at Gotlam village in Bondapalli mandal, where he administered polio drops to children at a centre set up at the local Zilla Parishad High School.
He said the government has undertaken the Pulse Polio programme with the objective of completely eradicating the disease. Although polio has largely been eliminated, the programme is being conducted as a precautionary measure to prevent any resurgence, he added.
Srinivas said a total of 1,172 polio centres have been established across Vizianagaram district to administer polio drops to around two lakh children. He stressed that it is the responsibility of parents to ensure that all children below five years of age receive the vaccine to safeguard their future.
The minister directed officials and health workers to ensure that no child is left out of the vaccination drive and to work in close coordination at the grassroots level to achieve 100 per cent coverage.
He said the government is giving priority to improving medical services in rural areas and instructed health workers to conduct door-to-door vaccination in villages from Monday onwards.
Senior health officials were present at the programme.
