Kadapa:Proddatur I Town police have arrested a native of Karnataka for allegedly cheating a woman of around ₹35 lakh and threatening and harassing her when she demanded repayment.

According to police, the victim, a software employee from Mittamadi Veedhi in Proddatur, had been working in Bengaluru when she became acquainted with the accused, Girish Reddy alias Girish, a cab driver from Hosuru village in Gauribidanur taluk of Chikkaballapur district in Karnataka.

Police said Girish gained her confidence and borrowed around ₹35 lakh from her on different occasions. When she subsequently demanded repayment, he allegedly threatened her, saying that he would return the money only when he had sufficient funds.

The woman later lodged a complaint in Chikkaballapur district. On learning about the complaint, Girish allegedly went to the woman’s residence in Proddatur and threatened to kill her. Further, he allegedly demanded more money from her and threatened to circulate on social media fake certificates of having married her if she fails to pay. He reportedly collected some more money from her using the threat.

Later, based on the woman’s complaint, Proddatur I Town police registered a case and launched an investigation. Police arrested the accused in Bengaluru and produced him before the Proddatur JFCM court. The magistrate remanded him to judicial custody, following which he has been shifted to Kadapa Central Jail, Proddatur circle inspector T.V. Kondareddy said.
