Kakinada Nursing College Standoff: Northeast Students Relocated

Kakinada: A dispute between northeast and local Andhra students at a private nursing college here over a missing phone was resolved following the timely intervention of district authorities, officials said.
The tension flared at the college hostel after a mobile phone belonging to a Northeastern state student went missing on Friday. Although recovered, allegations and counter-allegations levelled by the two groups sparked a heated standoff.
Upon learning of the incident, Kakinada District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad and Superintendent of Police (SP) Bindu Madhav dispatched officials to pacify the students and stabilise the situation.
As a precaution, students from the northeastern states, including those from Manipur and Nagaland, were shifted to a nearby hostel facility, where they were provided food and accommodation.
"The issue stemmed from a missing phone, which belonged to a student from the Northeast and it was subsequently found. Both groups were pacified and those from the northeastern states were accommodated in a nearby facility. They are safe and comfortable," said Prasad in a video message recently.
The college management has been warned and asked to improve the hostel facilities and foster an inclusive environment, he said. The District Collector also dispelled social media rumours claiming stolen certificates, unpaid fees and expulsion of students.
"The real fact is that it is an issue of a stolen mobile phone which was subsequently returned and there was a disagreement and a misunderstanding between the two group of students," he added. SP Madhav reaffirmed that all student concerns are being addressed to prevent future conflicts.
Expressing relief, the northeastern students thanked the district administration for their prompt action and for ensuring their safety.
"We are now safe and thank everyone who took the issue seriously and helped us... They have provided us separate accommodation for the Northeastern students of our nursing school," said a student.
