Nellore:Insufficient water in the boiler is suspected to have caused the explosion at the Tablets India Limited unit in Sri City on Saturday, in which five workers died, Labour Minister Vasamsetty Subhash said, citing preliminary findings.

The Minister said the incident was distressing and assured the bereaved families of all possible support. The government would provide Rs. 50 lakh in compensation to each deceased worker’s family, he said.

A boiler attendant who sustained severe injuries in the explosion was reported to be in critical condition.

Subhash said a preliminary inquiry indicated that the boiler had inadequate water at the time of the explosion. He added that a safety audit conducted on April 7 had certified that all safety requirements were in order.

The government has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine whether the incident resulted from mechanical failure or human error and to examine possible violations of safety norms or negligence.

District collector Dr S. Venkateswar had announced the suspension of Boilers Inspector Rambabu and ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
