Kakinada:Heavy rain lashed Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari and West Godavari districts for several hours on Sunday under the influence of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Several low-lying areas in towns across the districts were inundated.

Passengers faced severe inconvenience at Nidadavolu bus stand as rainwater stagnated on the premises and rose above knee level, making it difficult to enter or exit. The stagnant water also attracted mosquitoes and other insects.

In Rajamahendravaram, areas including Kambhala Cheruvu, Innespeta, Seethampeta and Alcot Gardens were inundated.

With Vinayaka Chavithi falling on Monday, towns and villages were bustling with vendors selling ritual leaves, flowers and fruits. Despite the rain, devotees turned up to purchase puja materials. However, vendors said prices had risen sharply as wholesale dealers increased rates for flowers and garlands.

A flower vendor said prices were higher than even during Varalakshmi Vratham days on auspicious Fridays in Sravana masam, adding that the festival was a major business opportunity for sellers.
