VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh High Court will hear on Tuesday a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a group of advocates seeking an independent investigation into the police firing on accused in the attack on a Class X girl student at Raptadu Zilla Parishad High School in Anantapur district on October 31.
The petitioners have sought an independent and impartial probe into the firing, preservation of CCTV footage, video recordings and other evidence relating to the incident, and protection of medical and forensic evidence.
They have also sought the recording of the accused’s statement before a magistrate and submission of the statement and video recordings to the High Court in a sealed cover.
HC to deliver verdict on YSRC plea for repoll in all Pulivendula wards today
The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday heard a petition filed by YSRC leaders seeking repolling in all wards of Pulivendula municipality and said it would deliver its decision at 7.30 am on Tuesday.
YSRC chairperson nominee for Pulivendula municipality Y.S. Prameela and Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy filed the interlocutory application, alleging electoral malpractices by ruling party supporters, including vote rigging, during the local body elections in Pulivendula. They sought repolling in all wards.
Senior advocate Subramanyam Sriram, appearing for the petitioners, argued that the State Election Commission had failed to take adequate measures to ensure free and fair elections in Pulivendula, despite an earlier High Court direction issued on a petition filed by the YSRC.
He urged the court to examine evidence, including CCTV footage and webcasting records, from all polling stations to establish the alleged electoral malpractices. He submitted that the SEC had failed to discharge its constitutional responsibility of conducting elections fairly and sought an interim order to stop the counting of votes scheduled for Tuesday.
SEC advocate N. Ashwani Kumar argued that the commission had obtained reports from the district Collector and Superintendent of Police soon after polling and examined complaints lodged by other contestants. Based on these reports and complaints, repolling was ordered in four wards on Monday, he said.
After hearing both the parties, the court said that it would give its order before counting of votes would begin at 8 am on Tuesday.
