Visakhapatnam:Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCH and RC), Visakhapatnam, has inaugurated a robotic surgery facility and performed its first robotic procedure.

NTPC Simhadri head of project Ayaskanta Jena inaugurated the system, which was donated under NTPC Simhadri’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. Hospital authorities said the facility would be available to all eligible patients, including beneficiaries under the NTR Vaidya Seva scheme, from Thursday.

HBCH and RC director Dr Umesh Mahantshetty said robotic surgery would improve precision in complex cancer procedures and strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide advanced treatment at affordable, subsidised rates. He said the technology would improve access to advanced cancer care for patients across Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring regions.

The hospital’s surgical team, senior consultants and staff attended the inaugural programme. Dr Manish S. Bhandare of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, was among those present.

The first robotic procedure marks the start of the hospital’s use of the technology to provide cancer treatment, officials said.
