NTR district collector Dr G. Lakshmisha praised the Crafts Council of Andhra Pradesh (CCAP) for its efforts to promote handloom weavers and artisans and preserve the state’s rich cultural heritage. He inaugurated a Handloom Bazaar organised by CCAP at PVP Square Mall here on Thursday, along with CCAP secretary S. Ranjana, vice-chairperson B. Sujatha and others. Organised to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti, the bazaar will be open from October 1 to 4, from 9.30 am to 8.30 pm.

Lakshmisha said handlooms and handicrafts were symbols of Andhra Pradesh’s culture and traditions. Such events would create awareness, particularly among youngsters, and help pass traditional arts to future generations.

The collector said CCAP was working on a non-profit basis for sustainable development of handlooms and handicrafts and creating awareness on the welfare of weavers and artisans, design development, training and marketing.

The bazaar showcases handloom products from Venkatagiri, Pochampally and Pedana and traditional handicrafts. He said the Centre and state governments were implementing several programmes for their preservation and promotion.

A National Saras Aajeevika Mela would soon be held in Vijayawada, he said, adding that efforts were also being made to preserve the artistic heritage of Kondapalli and Etikoppaka. Lakshmisha urged people to visit the bazaar and buy handloom and handicraft products to support weavers and artisans.
