Guntur to Strictly Enforce Single-Use Plastic Ban From August 17
Officials were asked to identify owners of vacant plots and ensure that the premises were cleaned
VIJAYAWADA: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) will strictly enforce the ban on single-use plastic from August 17, with violators liable to fines, chief medical and health officer Dr P. Shanthikala said on Friday.
Addressing a review meeting with sanitary inspectors at the GMC council meeting hall, held under the directions of municipal commissioner K. Mayur Ashok, she directed officials to intensify enforcement and create awareness among traders and the public about the harmful effects of plastic.
She also directed officials to strengthen measures against malaria and dengue by using ML oil and Abate, mosquito larvicides, in vacant plots and areas with stagnant water. Officials were asked to identify owners of vacant plots and ensure that the premises were cleaned.
Dr Shanthikala said adequate vehicles and sanitation workers had been deployed to improve civic cleanliness. Door-to-door garbage collection should be made 100 per cent, side drains cleaned daily and waste removed immediately, she said. Garbage points on roads should be eliminated and public sanitation complaints addressed promptly.
She directed officials to record the attendance of sanitation workers through the Facial Recognition System (FRS), with salaries processed based on the recorded attendance.
Officials were also asked to identify bulk waste generators and upload their details online. They were directed to create awareness about designated dog-feeding zones and encourage people feeding stray dogs to do so only at those locations.
Expressing concern over cattle roaming on major roads and causing traffic problems, Dr Shanthikala ordered officials to catch them and shift them to the municipal cattle pound.
