Guntur Posts 13% Drop in Crime; Convictions, Recoveries Rise

Vijayawada: Guntur district recorded a 13 per cent decline in overall crime in 2025, even as property offences and open drinking violations increased, according to police data presented at the annual crime review meeting held on Monday.
District superintendent of police Vakul Zindal said the district registered 8,937 cognisable offences in 2025, down from 10,252 cases in 2024.
Fatal road accident cases dropped sharply from 429 in 2024 to 322 in 2025, while non-fatal accidents also declined from 615 to 572 cases.
Despite the overall decline in crime, property offences increased marginally from 1,054 cases in 2024 to 1,090 in 2025. However, police apprehended interstate gangs and recovered stolen property worth ₹11.88 crore. Recoveries were also made in 176 pending cases from previous years, with the stolen property returned to victims.
Rape cases showed a decline, with 76 cases reported in 2025, while cybercrime cases reduced from 113 in 2024 to 102 in 2025. An amount of ₹1.47 crore was refunded to cybercrime victims during the year.
Convictions rose sharply, with 72 cases resulting in sentences ranging from one month to 20 years in 2025, compared to 28 cases in 2024. These included two cases with 20-year imprisonment, 11 life imprisonment cases, two 10-year sentences, and five seven-year sentences. Additionally, five ganja-related cases resulted in convictions.

Open drinking cases saw a steep rise. While 2024 recorded 151 cases with 253 arrests, 2025 saw 2,157 cases registered with 3,367 arrests. In addition, 1,398 persons were arrested and booked for drunk driving during the year.
In 2025, 91 ganja cases were registered, with 403 offenders involved in selling, supplying and consuming ganja remanded. Police seized 221.992 kg of dry ganja, 1.325 litres of liquid ganja, 506 grams of synthetic drugs, and several transport vehicles.
Under the PD Act, 11 habitual offenders were detained and lodged in Rajahmundry Central Jail. Police also identified 13 professional ganja offenders and forwarded PIT NDPS proposals to the government.
Traffic enforcement was intensified, with police booking 65,502 motor vehicle violations in 2025 and collecting ₹3.47 crore in fines through e-challans.
A district task force, constituted in September 2025, detected 65 cases, arrested 307 persons, and seized property worth ₹46.21 lakh in cases involving gambling, brothels, drugs, thefts and illegal transportation of cattle.
