VIJAYAWADA: The Government General Hospital (GGH) in Vijayawada has successfully performed its first cochlear implant surgery on a four-year-old girl, Tanmayi, who was born with severe sensorineural hearing loss.

The surgery marks a significant step towards making advanced hearing restoration services accessible to children with congenital hearing disabilities at a government hospital.

The procedure was performed under the Dr NTR Vaidya Seva scheme under the supervision of Dr K. Ravi, professor and head of the ENT department. Senior cochlear surgeon Dr Rayudu, associate professor Dr Anita, assistant professor Dr Srinivas and other members of the ENT team assisted in the surgery.

The anesthesia team, led by its professor and head, Dr S. Vinay, also played a crucial role. Professor Dr Kiran, associate professor Dr Sudharani, assistant professor Dr Suman, along with operation theatre staff and technicians, contributed to the successful completion of the procedure.

GGH superintendent Dr G Raghunandan and principal Dr A.Y. Rao provided the necessary encouragement and administrative support for the surgery.

The doctors said that the introduction of cochlear implant services at the government hospital is expected to benefit children with severe hearing impairment by improving access to advanced treatment. The successful procedure also represents an important development in the hospital's efforts to strengthen specialised medical care for young patients
