KURNOOL: Police opened fire on a runaway vehicle whose occupants had tried to allegedly loot a lorry, after coming under attack from the gang on the Nandyal-Dhone highway in the early hours of Thursday.

According to police, the gang tried to stop a vehicle transporting pigs on the highway. The occupants evaded the police and sped away in their vehicle.

Police on learning of the incident alerted highway patrolling teams, one of which attempted to block the ranaway vehicle. However, the gang attacked the police with stones and bottles, which shattered the window panes of the patrol vehicle.

Police then resorted to firing in self-defence. However, the gang managed to drive away. Police tried to intercept the vehicle again near Pyapili, but the gang managed to beat the trap again.

Police were examining CCTV footage and toll gate records to identify the vehicle and trace the accused. A week ago, a gang had looted 2.7 kg of gold worth ₹4 crore from a private bus on the highway.
