Floods Affect 3,552, Inundate 27 villages in ASR district

VISAKHAPATNAM: The rise of water-level in Godavari and Sabari rivers has affected 3,552 families and marooned 27 villages in four mandals in the ASR district, according to district collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar. He said all twings in the administration have swung into action, taking up relief and rescue efforts.
Talking to this correspondent on Monday, the collector said out of total affected families, 3,351 belonged to V.R. Puram and 201 to Kunavaram. He said that 86 families from Chintoor, VR Puram Etapaka mandals have been shifted to relief camps during the last two days.
But some of them have returned back as the water receded on Monday morning. “People whose houses are under stagnated water are staying in the camps,’’ the collector said. He said that 35 relief camps were established in Chintoor, 27 in Kunavaram, 32 in V.R. Puram and 26 in Yatapaka mandals.
On medical relief works, the collector said that 102 pregnant women were shifted to community health centres which are fully equipped with medicines, anti-venom ant rabies vaccines. Six generators have been installed at HCs and PHCs to deal with the power interruptions.
He said that 49 houses were inundated and the administration has deployed 26 boats with one exclusively assigned for ferrying patients and seven to move people affected by road blocks. Rest of the boats was being used for carrying people from marooned villages.
Another report said that Godavari water-level at Bhadrachalam stood at 45.80 and the discharge was 10,44,822 cusecs. The first warning was sounded on August 29 when the water-level touched 43 feet and the second warning at 48 feet on August 31. But it was withdrawn after the level came down to 47.9 feet. The third warning is given at 53 feet.
Maximum flood occurred in 1986, when the water-level touched 75.60 feet and the discharge was 27.02 lakh cusecs.
In 2022, the water-level touched 71.30 feet and the discharge was 24.43 lakh cusecs.
