 Vijayawada: The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has issued show-cause notices proposing termination of service to 56 doctors in Andhra Pradesh for remaining absent from duty unauthorisedly for more than a year.

The doctors have been asked to submit their explanations by February 21. Of the 56, nine are associate professors, 45 are assistant professors and two are tutors.

According to officials, the DME had earlier identified 89 doctors for unauthorised absence. Among them, 62 associate and assistant professors were absent for more than a year, 22 were absent for less than a year, and five professors were also found to be unauthorisedly absent.

When show-cause notices for termination were initially issued to 62 doctors, including 12 associate professors, 48 assistant professors and two tutors, six doctors reported back for duty. Subsequently, notices were served on the remaining 56 doctors.
