VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday expressed shock and grief over the death of veteran actress and Padma Shri awardee Sowcar Janaki, describing her demise as a major loss to Indian cinema. She was 94.

Naidu said Janaki had acted in more than 400 films and won several awards and accolades during her long and distinguished career. Her memorable characters would keep her alive in the hearts of people for generations, he said. The chief minister prayed for eternal peace to her soul and conveyed his condolences to the family.

Born on December 12, 1931, in a Kannada-speaking Madhva Brahmin family, Janaki was the elder daughter of Tekumalla Venkoji Rao and Sachi Devi of Rajahmundry. Her younger sister, Krishna Kumari, was also a noted actress. Janaki pursued her early education at Gauhati University in Assam and was later conferred an honorary doctorate by the University of Arizona.

Cinematography minister Kandula Durgesh termed her death an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry. Janaki had displayed remarkable versatility and natural acting in more than 400 films across Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.

Janaki’s family had a strong association with cinema. She is survived by two daughters and a son. Her granddaughter, Vaishnavi Aravind, followed the family’s acting legacy and appeared in several Tamil and Telugu films besides a few Malayalam films, beginning her acting career in 1987.

Minister Durgesh said Janaki’s contributions to cinema and her memorable performances would remain etched in the memories of millions of admirers.
