Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society project director B. Smaran Raj has called for greater awareness among youth about HIV/AIDS and ways to prevent infection.
Smaran Raj flagged off the state-level Red Run marathon programme in Vijayawada on Thursday by releasing balloons. People from across the state participated in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need to avoid discrimination against people infected with HIV/AIDS and called for greater awareness about how the infection is contracted and ways to avoid exposure to the disease. He urged more youth to join the awareness drive to reduce their risk of HIV infection.
The Red Run programme was earlier held in the districts, with those securing first, second and third places qualifying for the state-level programme in Vijayawada. Participants from the state-level event will be eligible to take part in regional and national-level marathons.
