Automatic Signalling Boost For Gudur–Vijayawada Rail Corridor
South Coast Railway commissions automatic block signalling on a 22.13-km section, improving safety, line capacity and train movement between Gudur and Vijayawada.
South Coast Railway’s Vijayawada Division has commissioned Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) on the triple-line section covering Talamanchi, Alluru Road, Bitragunta and Sri Venkateswarapalem, enhancing safety, line capacity and operational efficiency on the Gudur–Vijayawada route.
The project, executed by the signal and telecommunication projects wing of Vijayawada Division, covers 22.13 route kilometres (RKm) and 66.39 track kilometres (TKm). With its commissioning, the total ABS network between Gudur and Sri Venkateswarapalem has increased to 76.53 RKm.
The signalling system is designed to enable closer and safer train operations by continuously detecting track occupancy and automatically controlling signals. It incorporates Multi-Section Digital Axle Counter (MSDAC)-based train detection, electronic signalling arrangements, upgraded communication and monitoring facilities and enhanced safety provisions at identified level crossings.
Railway officials said the upgraded system would facilitate smoother train movements and reduce operational delays while increasing line capacity and providing greater flexibility in handling passenger and freight services. The technology is also expected to improve the reliability of train operations on the busy corridor.
The commissioning was carried out under the guidance of South Coast Railway general manager Sandeep Mathur, principal chief signal and telecommunication engineer O.V. Suresh Kumar, Vijayawada divisional railway manager Mohit Sonakiya, chief signal and telecommunication engineer (Projects) Narendra Singh and deputy chief signal and telecommunication engineer, Vijayawada, M. Veeraiah.
The officers appreciated the efforts of the Signal and Telecommunication Projects team, Vijayawada division, associated departments and executing agencies in completing the project and bringing the signalling infrastructure into service.
Mohit Sonakiya said the commissioning marked another step in SCoR’s modernisation drive aimed at ensuring faster, safer and more reliable movement of passenger and freight trains.
