TIRUPATI: Tirupati district police have intensified their anti-ganja drive by introducing medical test kits to identify users and trace supply networks. The move forms part of a broader effort to curb narcotic use in the district.

Superintendent of Police L. Subba Rayudu said a four-pronged strategy is being implemented to make Tirupati a ganja-free district. Awareness programmes are being conducted in schools, colleges, colonies and villages to educate people, particularly youth, on the harmful effects of narcotics.

He said strict legal action is being taken against those involved in ganja transport and sale. Police have identified 16 repeat offenders in ganja-related cases and booked them under the PIT NDPS (PD Act). Detention orders have been approved for 12 individuals, who have been sent to jail, while four cases remain under examination.

Rayudu said the newly introduced medical test kits have been distributed across all sub-divisions. “These kits will help identify ganja users. Those testing positive will be questioned to gather information on supply sources, enabling police to act against networks more effectively,” he said.

Alongside enforcement, police are focusing on behavioural change through counselling and rehabilitation measures. However, repeat offenders who test positive may face legal action.

The SP said tests may also be conducted based on credible information, including in educational institutions. He warned that ganja consumption is harming the future of youth and urged them to stay away from such habits.

Rayudu appealed to citizens to cooperate and share information on ganja activity by calling 1972 or 112, assuring confidentiality of informants.
