NELLORE: India is set to mark another milestone in its space programme with the launch of GSLV-F17 carrying EOS-05, the country’s first-ever imaging satellite designed to operate from geosynchronous orbit, on September 4.

The GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission is scheduled for 2.55 am from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The launch vehicle will place EOS-05 into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).

EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft designed to capture detailed images of the Earth and provide data for monitoring and other applications that require regular observation of the land and environment.

GSLV-F17 will be the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The mission will use a four-metre-diameter, ogive-shaped composite payload fairing to protect the satellite during its ascent.

EOS-05 is described as India’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from geosynchronous orbit. It is a replacement for GISAT-1A, which was lost in a launch failure in 2021.

The mission will be closely watched following two successive PSLV mission failures in 2025 and early 2026. ISRO had temporarily paused launches to investigate the causes of the setbacks involving the launch vehicle. The failures had raised concerns, making the GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission particularly significant as the space agency seeks to reinforce confidence in its launch programme.

The satellite is expected to strengthen India’s capabilities in Earth imaging, monitoring and other applications requiring advanced observation data.

The mission marks another significant step in India’s expanding space-based Earth observation programme and its efforts to deploy increasingly advanced satellite systems for national applications.
