Andhra Pradesh: 14-Km Crochet Tricolour Aims At Guinness World Record

VISAKHAPATNAM: A 14-km-long crocheted Tricolour was displayed at Visakhapatnam's Port Stadium on Sunday as part of Project Tiranga, a tribute to Pingali Venkayya, designer of the Indian national flag.
Organised by Mahila Manovikas, the initiative coincided with Venkayya's birth anniversary and aimed to promote patriotism while reviving the traditional art of crochet.
More than 40,000 hand-knitted crochet flags, made by women, children and craft enthusiasts from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, were stitched together. Contributions also came from Indian communities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai.
The 14 rows of crochet flags stretched across the stadium, surpassing the existing Guinness World Record of 11.78 km. Volunteers took nearly 12 hours to complete the installation.
Organiser Madhavi Suribhatla said the initiative was intended to preserve the art of crochet, encourage younger generations to learn the craft and unite people through a shared patriotic activity.
Guinness World Records representatives are expected to verify the display and announce whether it qualifies as a new world record.
