TIRUPATI: Former ISRO chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar observed that the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and robotics in the space sector is set to create new opportunities in research, innovation, and private enterprise.

Addressing students of the Srinivasa Institute of Technology and Management Studies on “AI and ML in Space Science” in Chittoor on Thursday, Dr. Kiran Kumar said the space sector is emerging as a major economic opportunity. It could be the fourth frontier after land, oceans, and air.

He disclosed that AI is already being used in several areas of space activity, including satellite data analysis, autonomous navigation, robotics, disaster management, and predictive maintenance. Rather than replacing scientists, AI is supporting them in analysing large volumes of data and taking faster decisions.

The former ISRO chief called upon students to build a strong foundation in basic subjects and pursue research and innovation. He revealed that the expanding space sector would provide opportunities not only for scientists and engineers but also startups and private companies.

He recalled the contribution of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai in laying the foundation for the country’s space programme. Despite restrictions on access to advanced technologies, India gradually developed its own capabilities and progressed from the SLV and ASLV programmes to the PSLV.

Dr. Kiran Kumar said India’s space programme has remained closely linked to public welfare. “Satellite applications have helped in weather forecasting, cyclone warnings, fisheries, tele-education, and telemedicine, among other areas", he pointed out.

Recalling some of the major achievements of the Indian space programme, the former ISRO chief cited Chandrayaan 1’s detection of water molecules on the Moon, the successful first attempt of the Mangalyaan mission to Mars, the Chandrayaan 3 lunar landing, and Aditya L1 mission to study the Sun.

He said the combination of space technology with AI, ML, and robotics would further expand the scope of exploration. He asked students to contribute to India’s efforts to strengthen its position in the global space sector.
