Teacher Dies Of Electrocution During Independence Day Celebrations In Odisha’s Balasore

Bhubaneswar: A teacher died of electrocution while preparing for an Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony at a private school in Maitapur area of Balasore district on Saturday, police and local sources said.
The deceased was identified as Priyabrata Behera. According to preliminary reports, Behera and another school employee were installing a flagpole when it accidentally came into contact with a low-tension (LT) overhead power line, electrocuting Behera.
The teacher was initially rushed to the Simulia Community Health Centre. Later, he was referred to the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A school employee who witnessed the incident said the flagpole became difficult to balance during installation and fell towards the overhead power line.
“Priyabrata and I were installing the flagpole when the incident occurred. We could not balance it properly and it fell onto the LT power line, which was some distance away. Everything happened within seconds,” the employee said.
Three to four students were also injured in the incident and were taken to Simulia Hospital for treatment. Some of them were reportedly discharged after their condition improved.
Meanwhile, Behera’s father, Gyanendra Behera, alleged that his son had initially been reluctant to go to the school but was called there.
“I did not even get to meet my son. He was unwilling to go to school, but he was called there. I sent him because we are poor and he needed a source of income. They called my son and killed him,” he said.
