Bhubaneswar: An eight-month pregnant woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by a pastor on the pretext of a prayer session in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, reports said on Thursday.

The alleged incident took place on August 7 under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station in Bhawanipatna, according to a complaint lodged by the woman.

The woman, who had reportedly been unwell for some time, approached the pastor, identified as Jinesh Kumar, seeking relief from her ailment. He allegedly claimed that he could cure her through prayer and asked her to visit his residence for a prayer session, according to the complaint.

The woman subsequently went to the pastor’s residence along with her husband. She has alleged that the sexual assault took place during the visit.

Following the complaint, police has initiated an investigation into the allegations. The woman’s statement is expected to be recorded as part of the investigation, while statements of other relevant witnesses may also be taken soon, sources said.

Sources in the police said a medical examination will be conducted in accordance with the prescribed legal procedure.

Police are yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, and it was not immediately clear whether the accused had been arrested or detained.
