Berhampore: The use of eggs to target Trinamul Congress leaders in West Bengal has led to a spike in their prices by over 50 per cent, according to wholesale egg traders. Though the consumption of eggs typically declines in the summer, a wholesale trader said people were using eggs for “egg therapy” against “tainted, accused, corrupted opposition Trinamul Congress leaders who are allegedly involved in rampant corruption”.

The retail price of an egg has increased from Rs 5 in the first week of May to Rs 7.84 in the third week of June, according to a statement by the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC).

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "Disgruntled people are throwing eggs at Trinamul Congress leaders in the state."

Incidents of egg-throwing were reported at multiple locations, including outside court premises. In one instance, a woman reportedly attempted to reach the CID headquarters in Kolkata to target Abhishek Bandopadhyay, but she was stopped by the police personnel.

TMC spokesperson Joy Prakash Majumdar was also targeted with eggs during a court appearance. In Jiagunj municipality, residents reportedly waited until early hours to throw eggs at Prasanjit Ghosh.

According to legal sources, people are throwing eggs to express their protest, as it attracts relatively minor legal consequences. A psychotherapist said public targeting of political figures in such a manner could damage their image when amplified through media coverage.
