Ladakh’s Cultural Heritage Receives Global Recognition Through GI Tagging
8 more products get prestigious GI tag
Srinagar: In a significant milestone for the preservation and promotion of Ladakh’s rich cultural and artisanal legacy, eight traditional handicraft products from the Union Territory have been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
This recognition reinforces Ladakh’s standing as a vibrant repository of indigenous knowledge, skilled craftsmanship, and centuries-old cultural traditions that continue to thrive in the region’s unique socio-cultural landscape, officials in Leh said on Thursday.
The newly registered GI-tagged products—Ladakh Challi Textiles, Ladakh Thigma, Ladakh Painting, Pabu of Ladakh, Ladakh Nambu Textile, Ladakh Pashmina Textile, Ladakh Chilling Metal Work, and Ladakh Likir Pottery—represent a diverse spectrum of Ladakhi artistry. Each of these crafts reflects not only technical excellence but also deep-rooted traditions that have been passed down through generations, embodying the identity, creativity, and resilience of the local communities.
The conferment of GI status marks a major achievement in safeguarding Ladakh’s traditional crafts and artistic expressions while significantly enhancing their visibility in both national and international markets, officials said.
A GI tag provides legal protection to products that are intrinsically linked to a specific geographical region, acknowledging their distinct qualities, reputation, and cultural significance. It ensures authenticity and helps prevent imitation, thereby preserving the integrity of these heritage products.
Describing the recognition as a moment of immense pride, Lieutenent Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena emphasised that the GI tags are far more than formal certifications—they are a tribute to the region’s enduring legacy of craftsmanship and artistic excellence. He noted that each product reflects the ingenuity of Ladakhi artisans and the unique cultural identity of the region. The recognition is expected to open new economic opportunities for local artisans, empowering them while safeguarding their traditional knowledge systems.
The Lt. Governor also commended the dedication and perseverance of artisans, cooperatives, and cultural custodians whose collective efforts have made this achievement possible. "Their commitment to preserving traditional techniques and sustaining the authenticity of these crafts has played a crucial role in bringing international recognition to Ladakh’s heritage," he said.
These latest registrations further expand Ladakh’s growing portfolio of GI-certified products. Previously, Raktsey Karpo Apricot, Ladakh Pashmina, and Shing-Tsak had also received GI recognition, highlighting the exceptional quality and uniqueness of the Himalayan region’s agricultural and artisanal outputs. Together, these recognitions serve as a powerful affirmation of Ladakh’s cultural richness and its potential to shine on the global stage while preserving its timeless traditions.
