Chennai: Campaign Ends Today Evening

Chennai: Campaign for the by-elections to the Madurantakam (SC) and Dharapuram (SC) Assembly constituencies, where polling will be held between 7 am to 6 pm on Tuesday, would come to a close at 6 pm on Sunday and the restrictions that would come in with the closure of campaign would be in force till the end of the poll process.

During the periods no one shall convene, hold or attend any public meeting or procession in connection with the elections, no one shall display to the public any election matter by means of cinematograph, television or other similar apparatus, like, FM Radios, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, including all electronic form of communication, including SMS and internet.

The notification said that no one should propagate any election matter to the public by holding or by arranging the holding of any musical concert or any theatrical performance or any other entertainment or amusement with a view to attracting the members of the public and any violation of the above two provisions was punishable with imprisonment for 2 years or fine or both, with reference to Section 126 (2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

All political functionaries and party workers who had been brought from outside the constituencies and who were not voters of the constituency had been asked to leave the constituency immediately after 6.00 P.M. on Sunday.

Kalyana mandapams, community halls, lodges and guest houses would be checked to find out whether outsiders were accommodated in the premises and vehicle permits given to candidates including star campaigners would cease to be valid from 6.00 P.M. on October 04, the notification said.

On the day of polling, each contesting candidate would be entitled to use one vehicle for themselves, one vehicle for the use of the election agent in respect of the Assembly Constituency and another vehicle for use of his election agent or workers. The permits of the vehicles indicated above will be issued by the Returning Officer.
