Bhubaneswar: A pilgrim bus travelling from West Bengal to Andhra Pradesh met with a tragic accident in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday, leaving the driver dead and at least 14 passengers critically injured.

The mishap occurred near Bahanaga Bazaar on a bridge under Khantapada police limits in the Soro area. According to preliminary reports, the bus was carrying more than 50 pilgrims when the driver allegedly dozed off during the long journey. The vehicle reportedly went out of control, rammed onto the bridge structure and plunged downward, leaving it hanging precariously and triggering panic among passengers.

Police and fire services personnel rushed to the spot immediately after being alerted and launched a rescue operation. Trapped passengers were evacuated from the damaged vehicle, and the injured were shifted to a nearby medical college and hospital. Hospital sources said 14 passengers sustained grievous injuries and remain in critical condition, while several others suffered minor injuries.
