Bhubaneswar: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday inaugurated the two-day National Conference of Chairpersons of Committees on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in Bhubaneswar.
For the first time since its inception, the conference is being held outside New Delhi. Around 120 delegates from states, Union Territories, and Parliament have registered to take part in the deliberations.
The two-day meet will focus on strengthening constitutional safeguards, enhancing socio-economic development, and sharing best practices for the empowerment of SC and ST communities. The central theme of the event is “Role of Parliamentary and Legislative Committees on Welfare, Development and Empowerment of SCs and STs.”
Apart from Speaker Birla, the conference is being attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Minister Jual Oram, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, and Parliamentary Committee on the Welfare of SCs and STs chairperson Faggan Singh Kulaste.
The first such conference was held in 1976 in New Delhi. This year’s event will conclude on August 30 with Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati delivering the valedictory address.
