Odisha Police have handed over the Rayagada mob assault case to the IUCAW, with 23 arrests made and authorities promising a swift, comprehensive investigation.

The Odisha Police have transferred the investigation into the mob assault on a young woman and her male companion in Rayagada district to the Integrated Unit for Crime Against Women (IUCAW), citing the seriousness of the case and the need for a comprehensive probe.

Additional Director General of Police (Crime Against Women and Children Wing) S. Shyni said the case, classified as a "Red Flag" investigation, will be monitored directly by the CAW&CW wing to ensure a swift and thorough inquiry.

“The local police was investigating the case, and we instructed that it be handed over to IUCAW. We will closely monitor the probe and have already issued the first set of directions for a smooth investigation,” she said.

Police have arrested 23 accused so far in connection with the June 16 incident. Shyni said no one found guilty would be spared and thanked local residents who helped rescue the victims from the mob.

The ADG assured full support to the victims, particularly the woman, who is not a resident of Odisha. She also urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands and instead report any suspicions of criminal activity to the police.

The incident occurred when the two victims, travelling on a scooter from Daringbadi to Kalahandi, reportedly lost their way and entered Intaliguda village in Rayagada district. Rumours that they were child kidnappers spread rapidly, leading villagers to chase and assault them.

According to police, the scooter skidded while being pursued, after which the duo was attacked before being rescued by local residents. Both were treated at a community health centre and later shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Rayagada. They have since recovered and been discharged.

Police have registered three cases and launched an extensive investigation with assistance from the Crime Branch. Intensified raids have reportedly led many adult men in Intaliguda village to flee, leaving the village largely deserted.
