BHOPAL: A 19-month-old male cheetah of the Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh who had strayed into the Morena territorial forest division, around 100 km away, was found injured and later rescued, officials said on Monday.

The cub, born to female cheetah Nirva in the KNP, had strayed into the Pahargarh range of the neighbouring Morena forest division, where it was found with a back injury by a cheetah monitoring team on Sunday evening.

A rescue team rushed to the spot late on Sunday night and darted the wild cat to immobilize it for a preliminary health examination before being shifted to the medical facility of the KNP, a senior forest officer said.

“The cause of injury is yet to be ascertained”, the forest officer said.

The nature of injury could be known after 48 hours, he added.

A press note issued in the evening by Director, Cheetah Project, Uttam Kumar Sharma, briefed on the incident saying that “One of Nirva's 19-month-old male cubs, ranging in the wild near the Morena Territorial Forest Division, was found injured by the monitoring team on the evening of 25 October 2026. He was rescued during the night and brought to Kuno for medical examination and treatment”.

The release further said that the cheetah is currently undergoing treatment for the injuries sustained.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of injuries and all possible angles are being examined, regarding the circumstances leading to the condition of the cheetah, the press release said.

The incident comes hours after the killing of a calf by two cheetahs from Kuno in the forested village of Bomra, falling under the buffer zone of the KNP.

The incident occurred early on Saturday morning.

Of the 53 cheetahs currently housed in Kuno, 15 are in the free range.
