Chennai: Reliance Jio, which is completing 10 years of operations, has credited affordable connectivity and technology-led innovation with transforming India’s digital landscape, taking the country from limited mobile data usage to one of the world’s largest data-consuming markets.
The company was founded with the vision of accelerating India’s digital transformation by making high-speed connectivity affordable and widely accessible.
When Jio entered the market in 2016, mobile data was expensive and average monthly consumption was less than 0.2 GB per user. Data prices, which were around ₹228 per GB, have now fallen to about ₹7.9, while average consumption on Jio’s network has risen to around 42.3 GB per month.
Jio now serves more than 524 million customers, while its digital applications have over 360 million monthly active users. The company has also expanded into home broadband, enterprise connectivity, cloud services, devices and artificial intelligence.
Jio has developed an end-to-end technology ecosystem, including its 5G network and fixed wireless access technology. The company has filed more than 6,800 patents covering areas such as 4G, 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence and cloud technologies.
Jio’s technology platforms are also being used by businesses, banks, airports and electricity distribution companies, while private 5G networks are being developed for industrial applications.
On satellite connectivity, the executives said services such as Starlink could have opportunities in countries with lower population coverage, but India’s extensive terrestrial telecom network would limit the scope for satellite services in mainstream connectivity.
Jio’s focus would remain on providing customers with better, faster and more affordable digital services, while continuing to work with global technology companies and partners.
The company also highlighted its growing role in AI and next-generation technologies, saying the coming decade would focus on taking India from being a major technology consumer to becoming a technology developer and exporter.
