Japan PM Sanae Takaichi's Guwahati Visit Cancelled
Mr Sarma however clarified that the government of India has assured to organise proposed investors to meet on a different date: Reports
GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the much-anticipated first official visit of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Assam from July 1 has been cancelled.
Informing that the external affairs ministry has informed them that the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state for India-Japan summit has also been cancelled, Mr Sarma told reporters that he was not aware of the reasons.
Mr Sarma however clarified that the government of India has assured to organise proposed investors to meet on a different date.
Earlier, the First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in India had stated that the proposed visit, scheduled between July 1 and July 3, has not been formally confirmed so far. Her remarks come amid growing reports suggesting that the high-profile visit may be called off due to a combination of undisclosed factors.
Prime Minister Takaichi is travelling to India for the annual India-Japan summit, which will now be held at New Delhi instead of Guwahati in Assam.
The visit was also expected to include a delegation of over 50 top Japanese business leaders, underscoring the economic significance of the engagement. Key areas of focus for the summit were likely to include strengthening bilateral supply chains, collaboration in semiconductors, renewable energy partnerships, and enhanced industrial cooperation in India’s Northeast region.
On the Indian side, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart during the visit, further highlighting its diplomatic importance.
In anticipation of the high-profile diplomatic event, Guwahati was undergoing a visible beautification drive in recent days, including road repairs, plantation of saplings along major corridors, cleaning of public spaces, and fresh repainting of infrastructure to present the city in a more polished and welcoming appearance.
