Jaishankar To Lead Indian Delegation At 81st UN General Assembly

NEW DELHI: Amid resurgent tensions between India and the United States over the potential imposition of 100 per cent tariffs, external affairs minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will represent India at the annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York at the end of the week, where he may also hold talks with senior figures in the Trump administration.
In a statement on Sunday evening, New Delhi said: “EAM, S. Jaishankar will be leading the Indian delegation for the high-level week at the 81st session of the UNGA, New York, USA. The EAM’s address at the high-level session of the 81st United Nations General Assembly is scheduled for September 26.
During the visit, the EAM will also attend various plurilateral and bilateral meetings.”
However, New Delhi’s official statement did not specifically mention any scheduled meetings between the EAM and members of the Trump administration.
Hours after the United States Congress passed the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act-which empowers US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries buying Russian oil, including India and China—New Delhi indicated on Thursday that any such measure could harm bilateral ties with the US and severely disrupt global oil markets.
India remains deeply concerned by these developments, as the imposition of such steep tariffs on Indian goods would eliminate their competitiveness in the lucrative American market, causing substantial losses for Indian exporters and the broader economy.
