BJP To Deploy ‘Vistaraks’ Across Uttarakhand
Party targets grassroots gaps and nearly 3,000 booths ahead of Assembly elections
New Delhi: Seeking to counter 10 years of anti-incumbency in Uttarakhand, the BJP will deploy a vistarak in every Assembly constituency to strengthen its grassroots organisation ahead of next year’s elections.
The vistaraks will remain in their assigned constituencies until the elections and work to consolidate the party’s support among voters.
The BJP has been in power in the hill state since 2017 and is seeking a third consecutive term in the Assembly elections scheduled for early next year.
Sources said the party had launched the vistarak programme to expand its grassroots presence and enrol new members.
“Each vistarak will work to strengthen the party at the ground level by spending time with people,” a BJP source said.
The vistaraks will reach out to voters in their respective constituencies and highlight the work undertaken by the Union and state governments over the past 10 years.
They have also been given a list of dos and don’ts to ensure uniformity in their functioning across the state.
Earlier this month, BJP president Nitin Nabin visited Uttarakhand and directed the state unit to focus on strengthening the organisation at the booth level.
The party is concentrating on nearly 3,000 polling booths where it failed to establish a lead in the previous Assembly elections. It is conducting a booth-wise assessment and preparing customised plans for each of these polling stations.
“As part of our booth-management strategy, we plan to plug organisational gaps with the help of vistaraks in areas where we failed to secure a lead in the previous elections despite being in power since 2017,” an Uttarakhand BJP leader said.
The leader said the exercise demonstrated the party’s emphasis on booth management, which it considers the foundation of its electoral success.
The BJP leadership believes that even marginal gains at the booth level could significantly influence the results.
The party returned to power for a second consecutive term in the last state elections, winning 47 of the 70 Assembly seats.
