Bhubaneswar: India on Monday evening successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR-120) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, in Odisha. The rocket was tested to its maximum range of 120 km, successfully demonstrating all planned in-flight manoeuvres.

The LRGR hit the designated target with textbook precision, validating its guidance and control systems. All deployed range instruments tracked the rocket throughout its trajectory, confirming the accuracy of the test parameters.

The LRGR has been designed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in association with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), with support from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI).

The flight trial was coordinated by ITR and the Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE). The rocket was launched from an in-service Pinaka launcher, demonstrating the system’s versatility and its capability to fire different Pinaka variants with varying ranges from the same launcher.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on the successful test, stating that the development of long-range guided rockets would significantly enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces and described it as a “game changer”.

Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, Dr Samir V. Kamat, who witnessed the trial, also congratulated the teams involved for successfully accomplishing all mission objectives.
