New Delhi: An Indian national was killed and several others injured in a missile and drone strike on Kuwait International Airport, prompting India to condemn the attack and reiterate its opposition to targeting civilians and infrastructure.
In a statement on Wednesday, New Delhi said, “We condemn the attack on the Kuwait International Airport today in which an Indian national has died and several of our nationals are injured. Since the onset of the conflict in West Asia, we have strongly urged that civilian population and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted. We again call upon parties to cease such attacks.”
It added, “We offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Our Embassy is extending all possible assistance to those injured. We remain in close contact with local authorities for the welfare of Indian nationals. Indian Missions and Posts across the region are on alert and continue to proactively support our community.”
According to reports, Kuwait’s health ministry said at least 63 people were injured in the attack, including airport staff and passengers. Authorities said missile and drone strikes damaged airport facilities and diplomatic premises, leading to temporary suspension of flight operations.
Health Ministry spokesperson Abdullah al-Sanad said, “Sixty-three injured individuals were received and distributed among hospitals... This includes serious injuries... including head wounds, cerebral haemorrhages, amputations and injuries resulting from explosions,” adding that 25 ambulances were deployed to the site.
The incident comes amid renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran in West Asia. Reports said US forces carried out strikes on an Iranian military facility on Qeshm Island and intercepted drones launched towards civilian vessels.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for the strike, stating it was in retaliation for US actions. “In response to this aggression, the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, which hosts helicopters, as well as the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, were targeted with missiles and drones by the Guards' forces,” the statement said.
Bahrain’s military said it intercepted missiles and drones targeting its territory.
The developments mark an escalation in tensions in the region, with civilian infrastructure affected.
