KOLKATA: Trinamul Congress scion Abhishek Banerjee moved the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday with a petition seeking cover from arrest in the case of his party MLAs’ forged signatures which were used to stake a claim for the main opposition party’s status in the House, leading to a CID probe by the BJP government.

An HC vacation bench of Justice Apurba Singha Roy, who heard the verbal appeal by Mr Banerjee’s lawyer, has granted him permission to file the petition. The matter is expected to come up for hearing on June 5. Mr Banerjee, who has come under the CID scanner in the case, skipped its summons for appearance to face questioning on June 1 due to his ill health.

The TMC national general secretary was served a fresh notice later. This was the second instance when the three-time Diamond Harbour MP had to rush to HC for legal relief in a criminal case after TMC lost power in West Bengal. He earlier got an interim protection from the HC on May 21 in the case of his provocative poll campaign speech targeting union home minister Amit Shah.

In the afternoon, an Enforcement Directorate team however visited Mr Banerjee's residence at Kalighat Road to serve him summons directing him to appear on June 15 in primary teachers’ recruitment scam.

Meanwhile, TMC vice president Joyprakash Majumdar was arrested by the cops of Bidhannagar North police station for forcibly occupying a flat of an aged woman in Salt Lake for the last 14 years and threatening her.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mr Majumdar went to stay as a tenant at the flat (HE 337) of Arati Mukherjee in 2012 for a term of three years. He however did not vacate his accommodation after 2015 and continued to stay there without renewing the agreement.
