WhatsApp group distributes water in Malappuram
Nearly 500 families are benefiting from of the drinking water supply, the group said.
MALAPPURAM: This drought has not been too hard on colony inmates of Tirurangadi. They are a bit relieved as they are getting drinking water supplied by a WhatsApp group regularly at their premises for the past 15 days. The organisers have promised that the supply will continue till the condition imp-roves. ‘Pantharangadi Souhruda Koottayma’, with 60 members in Tirurangadi and abroad, is collecting money and drinking water and supplying the water to drought-hit areas. Even though the group was formed with members of Muslim Youth League and Youth Congress, they said that they were not intending to add politics to the work.
“There are areas in our locality, including the colonies that suffer due to the acute shortage of drinking water. The group members from abroad also generously donated to raise Rs 1 lakh to buy cans, pipes and rent for the vehicle to supply water. Members themselves collect water from their wells to be supplied,” said P.K. Abdul Azees, Karshaka Congress Malappuram district general secretary. On a daily basis, 12,000 to 14,000 litres of drinking water is being distributed in the 1,2,3,4, 36, 37, 38 and 38 divisions of the municipality in a lorry. Nearly 500 families are benefiting from of the drinking water supply, the group said. Legislator P.K. Abdu Rabb inaugurated the project.
