Odia Music Composer Abhijit Majumdar Passes Away At 54
Artistes, political leaders mourn loss of one of Odisha’s most influential music directors
Bhubaneswar: Renowned Odia music composer and vocalist Abhijit Majumdar passed away at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Sunday. He was 54. His death cast a pall of gloom over the Odia film and music industry, with artistes, political leaders, and fans across the state expressing deep grief.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi condoled Majumdar’s death, describing it as an irreparable loss to Odisha’s cultural landscape. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Chief Minister said Majumdar’s contribution to music and cinema would be remembered for generations and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, praying for the peace of the departed soul.
BJP national vice-president and Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda also expressed sorrow over the composer’s demise, calling it the “end of an era” in the Odia music world. He described Majumdar’s passing as an irreplaceable loss and extended his sympathies to the family.
Several prominent members of the Odia music fraternity paid tribute to Majumdar, remembering both his artistic legacy and personal warmth. Music director Goodly Rath said Odisha had lost a great composer and he had lost a close friend, adding that the industry was still reeling from recent losses.
Music director Premanand termed Majumdar’s death a collective loss for the State, saying the era he created through his music would live on. He added that while birth and death are determined by fate, untimely deaths leave deep pain behind, especially for the family and the creative community.
Actress Pinki Pradhan also recalled her association with the composer, describing him as a true performer and a kind individual who played a key role in popularising Odia music and creating opportunities for artistes.
Abhijit Majumdar was widely recognised for his immense contribution to Odia music. During his career, he composed over 700 songs for films and independent projects and was regarded as one of the most influential composers of his generation in Odisha.
