Cottages being constructed as part of forest department's tourism promotion initiatives at Brahmagiri, a mountain range between Kodagu district in Karnataka and Wayanad district.

Wayanad: Reacting to the tourism projects that have become controversial, North Wayanad DFO Narendranath Veloori told Deccan Chronicle that they were entirely eco-friendly and did not cover large tracts of land. “We have two tourism projects- one in Muneeswarankunnu and another in Brahmagiri Hills”, he said. He said that at Muneeswarankunnu, the suggestion for trekking came from the local people, resort owners and farmers.

“It is not a hamlet but a tiny town. We already have a road to the spot and a forest camp house also in the land where watchers hold vigils round the clock”, he added.  “We have five tents on the spot, all eco-friendly pre-fabricated tents. No cement, no construction. And moreover, the facilities are at a minimum with 8/8 tents”, he added.  He said the area was adjacent to private plantations and at the beginning of the jungle.

The facilities at the Brahmagiri tourism project also was the same. The only difference was that the land was grassland. “Even during the British period there was a camp shed in the spot. About four years back, we constructed a camp shed and there was also a watch tower. The road to the spot was there even during the British period,” he added.
