Sankranti Shows India’s Cultural Richness: Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings to people across the country on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, saying the harvest festival reflects the richness of India’s cultural landscape and reinforces the spirit of togetherness that binds its people.
He also conveyed greetings to the people of Assam on the occasion of Magh Bihu, describing it as a festival of joy, warmth and brotherhood that embodies the best of Assamese culture.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said that Sankranti is celebrated in different parts of the country according to local customs and traditions. He prayed to Lord Surya for the happiness, prosperity and good health of all.
In another message, he greeted people on the occasion of Uttarayan, expressing hope that Makar Sankranti would bring happiness, good health and well-being, while strengthening bonds of togetherness and ushering in prosperity and positivity.
Conveying greetings to the people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, Modi said Sankranti holds a special place in the lives of farmers and their families, as it is an occasion to express gratitude to those who nourish society. In letters addressed to people of the three states, he said the festival marks a period of hope and positivity, symbolising new beginnings with the northward movement of the sun.
The Prime Minister noted that although Sankranti is celebrated in different forms across the country, it is observed with the same enthusiasm everywhere, reflecting India’s cultural diversity while reminding people of shared values and unity.
In a separate letter written in Assamese and English, Modi said the essence of Magh Bihu lies in contentment and gratitude. He described the festival as marking the completion of the harvest season and an opportunity to appreciate the efforts of hardworking farmers who enrich people’s lives.
He added that Magh Bihu encourages generosity and care among people, and expressed hope that the festival would bring peace, good health, happiness and prosperity in the year ahead.
