Hyderabad: The Drug Control Administration (DCA), whose officials recently seized huge quantities of spurious antibiotic and other drugs, has prima facie found that the accused have supplied those drugs to at least 25 stores within the city and in some other parts of the state.

They have also identified the kingpins supplying these spurious drugs to the accused and launched a hunt to nab them, said DCA director V.B. Kamalasan Reddy. DCA has detected two cases of spurious antibiotics being shipped to Telangana and seized a huge quantity of drugs

DCA found that these drugs are manufactured in companies located in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. They engage in manufacturing spurious quality of fast running drugs of reputed pharma companies and pump into the market, by mixing them with the original drugs.

By offering huge discounts, the manufacturers flood the market with the spurious stockst, but the same are sold by the pharmacists at MRP.

DCA, while strengthening their information gathering and intel networks, have also started alerting the manufacturers, under whose brand name these spurious drugs are being manufactured so that they can also keep an eye on such activities and take action.

Kamalasan Reddy said that some moles in the pharma sector are indulging in such illegal activities and damaging the reputation of the entire sector.

“We urge them to be alert of such actors,” he said, adding that in the interest of public health, they are taking stringent action against such persons and firms.
