Hyderabad: Some senior software professionals may find their salary cut this year. “The salary of a techie drawing Rs 10 lakh per annum has been revised to Rs 9 lakh. It has been conveyed that this decision will be implemented from next month’s salary,” a software engineer said.

This has led to a change of mindset of experienced techies with regard to their salary: It is okay if there is no hike, but their salaries should not be cut.

The Forum for IT Engineers was critical of what it called as “salary decrements” or “negative increments”.

“Negative increments? And without a proper notice period?. The updated salary with reduced amount will be credited in the coming month and the professionals are being given a notice of just 20 days,” the forum said.

According to the HR director in an IT firm, a cut in salaries was not new but its implementation was different.

“If the company was having a tough time on the revenue front, techies used to be made aware of the situation. They used to be told that the revised salary would be implemented in two or three months,” he said. There are no such courtesies this time.

Techies allege that IT firms are resorting to this exercise in view of backlash over lay-offs. Instead of serving termination letters, companies are going for a pay cut to come out of this problem, they said.
